The HelpLine is an easy way to apply for MLSA services. MLSA gives free legal help to low-income people living in Montana. MLSA serves the entire state through many different kinds of programs and services. Our services are free. But you may have to pay court costs.
When can I call the HelpLine?
|Monday through Thursday||8:30am – 5:30pm|
|Friday||8:30am – 4:30pm|
What should I expect when I call the HelpLine?
You will not be denied our services on the basis of race, color, sex, sexual orientation, creed, national origin, age, religion, political affiliation or belief or disability.The first person you will talk to is an intake worker. That person will help MLSA determine if you are eligible for services.
What will happen when you ask for help from MLSA?
- We will ask you some questions about your income, assets and other personal information. MLSA will not tell anyone else anything about you unless you want us to. If you do not qualify for help, we’ll tell you right away. We may call or send you a letter.
If you do qualify for help:
- We may help you solve your problem yourself. We may give you some information about your legal rights and forms and information that are available online.
- We may ask you to send us more information about your case. We will review it before we give you any more information or advice.
- We may refer you to a pro bono program in your area.
- We may represent you.
Sorry, we cannot help with criminal cases, traffic violations, medical malpractice or personal injury. MLSA cannot take every case. Visit the Eligibility Guidelines to learn more about that.
But your phones are always busy!
Sometimes you may have a hard time getting through on the phones. We want to hear from you so please keep trying. The phones are especially busy on Mondays. Please try us again at different times. Don’t wait until the last minute to call us about an emergency!
