Legal Advice and AI

When it comes to legal advice and legal arguments, you should never rely only on artificial intelligence (AI) technology. This includes ChatGPT, DeepSeek, Google AI Overview, and AI chatbots on social media.

When you ask AI technology about a specific legal problem, it’s not the same as simply searching for information online. It rapidly scans a massive amount of information on the internet and then tells you what it thinks you want to know. The AI technology might misinterpret the information it finds online, and it might even make up information based on what it calculates you want to hear. For example, if you ask an AI chatbot to make a legal argument for you to read in front of a judge to support your case, the chatbot might make up a fake law. This could cause you to lose your case or even be held in contempt of court, which could result in a fine or jail time.

Legal information and legal advice are best when they come from people. Unlike AI technology, lawyers have a duty to make sure they are not misstating the facts or the law to a judge.
