On September 2, 2026, the Montana Supreme Court released a statement detailing the discovery of unauthorized access to court data. The case management system that was affected is used for E-filing, the electronic filing system for Montana’s court system. The system is also used by the Montana Supreme Court for its appellate cases.
If you have been involved in a case in any Montana state court, your personal identifying information (PII) may be at risk. People who have been charged with state crimes should pay particular attention because PII is typically included when criminal charges are filed.
Information that may be at risk from the data leak includes:
- Case numbers
- Party names
- Party addresses
- Phone numbers
- Some driver’s license numbers
- Some dates of birth of individuals charged with a crime, the charge, and the docket entry descriptions
Court documents were not included in the leak.
