Telephone Consumer Protection Act – Know Your Rights

The Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) protects consumers from robocalls and prerecorded messages. This act applies to cell phones, residential phones, text messages, and faxes.

Cell phones: Telemarketers, scammers, or debt collectors cannot make an automated robocall, prerecorded message, or text message to your cell phone without your permission.

Residential phones: Telemarketers cannot call your residential phone line using an artificial or prerecorded voice without your prior written consent.

To learn more about the TCPA, read Nolo’s article “The TCPA: Protection Against Robocalls and Prerecorded Calls” at www.nolo.com/legal-encyclopedia/the-tcpa-protection-against-robo-calls-prerecorded-calls.html

You can also add yourself to the national do-not-call list by visiting the Federal Trade Commission website at www.ftc.gov/news-events/topics/do-not-call-registry
