March is the Final Month to Take Advantage of Health Insurance Special Enrollment Period for Those Who Need to File 2014 Taxes

If you tried to enroll in healthcare coverage on the federal Marketplace earlier this year and were told you were ineligible for coverage because you had not filed your 2014 taxes or reconciled your 2014 advance payment premium tax credit (APTC), you may be able to enroll in healthcare coverage through a newly announced Special Enrollment Period (SEP) from February 1, 2016 through March 31, 2016.

To be eligible, you must:

  • not be currently enrolled in 2016 coverage through the Marketplace;
  • not be receiving an APTC in 2016 because you had not filed your 2014 taxes, and
  • file your 2014 taxes and reconcile your 2014 APTC prior to March 31, 2016.

You may be eligible for free tax preparation assistance to take advantage of this SEP. Please visit montanafreefile.org for tax preparation locations near you.

If you have a tax dispute with the IRS and need legal assistance, Montana Legal Services Association's Low Income Tax Clinic may be able to assist you. Please contact 1-800-666-6899 to see if you are eligible for free tax law help.
